I’ve been thinking all afternoon…. Has there been anything more embarrassing happen to me this year than “THIS?”
I can’t think of anything. I’m sure I’ve been embarrassed. I’m sure there have even been some very embarrassing moments. How could there not be in an entire year? But I don’t recall anything specific, so I’m thinking “this” could be “it” – the most embarrassing moment of the year.
Last Christmas (2015), I received a gift from a team member. It was a Banana Bread Mix.
When I unwrapped the package, I looked at the box of mix, and thought it was a slightly unusual gift. I hadn’t told her I liked banana bread. I hadn’t created a kit with the focus on bananas or anything remotely related. I couldn’t quite decide why she chose that gift; but I was thankful she thought of me and I put the box in my pantry.
My husband doesn’t like banana bread, so every time I thought of baking the bread, I knew I would end up eating it all by myself, so I decided to postpone making it until we had guests whom I could share it with.
Yesterday I reached for the box in my pantry. I was finally going to bake it.
I turned on my oven to let it pre-heat, grabbed a bowl from the cupboard, ripped open the box….. and saw white tissue paper inside. Puzzled, I reached in and pulled out the contents. Carefully wrapped inside the paper was the most beautiful pocket album, created with papers and embellishments from a kit that I designed. Each page was intricately created, hand inked, and painstakingly designed. Each page had a pocket for photos. And all were connected with a brass ring, embellished with vintage looking charms. It is beautiful.
And I just found it. Eleven months later.
I talked to my friend today and confessed that it was only yesterday that I decided to bake the bread, and found her gift. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that she thought it was hysterically funny.
I’m always looking for boxes at Christmas time. Maybe I’ll start raiding my pantry for boxes when I need one. But if I do, I need to decide whether or not to include a note telling the recipient to open the box upon receipt. If I don’t….. it could make for a great story.
