Eight Things I Learned this Week

November 11, 2017 by Karen 18 Comments

Some weeks, nothing of much importance happens; some weeks, I learn (or am reminded) of all sorts of things.  This week has been that kind of week for me.

  1. I learned that when you put away a folding table, you need to keep your fingers out of the way of the legs or you will get your fingers pinched…. really hard. Well, to be fair I knew that, but I was definitely reminded of it this week.
  2. I learned that when you are favoring a really sore finger, you probably shouldn’t be using a hammer, because your “aim” could be off and you could smash another finger.
  3. I learned that it is NOT a good idea to put food on the stove and then go check email quickly. It’s way too easy to get engrossed in what you are reading and forget all about the stove.
  4. I learned that smoke alarms are REALLY loud and scare dogs.
  5. I learned that “wallpapering” a wall with fabric and starch is NOT as easy as YouTube leads you to believe.
  6. I learned (or was reminded) that I need to trust my first instincts; that the first paint I used on the wall was fine after all and I didn’t really need to test 5 other colors to be sure of it.
  7. I learned my 2-year-old Bichon is more afraid of my 2-year-old granddaughter than she is of him. (Thank goodness!)
  8. And finally, I learned some things that look good from far away….. don’t look so great up close.

Riley BEFORE my very-first-ever-attempt-at-grooming him

Riley AFTER my very-first-ever-attempt-at-grooming him.  Not looking too bad… from far away.

Up close? Well…. LOL… Good thing he doesn’t have anywhere special to go this week!

What did YOU learn this week?

I learned that I should not try to read your blog posts while I am taking a drink! This is hilarious! Although, I’m truly sorry about your finger, we’ve already had that conversation about paint multiple times. You had my husband and I both laughing! Thank you for sharing your antics and allowing me to start my weekend laughing out loud!

Yeah… that paint really got me! 😉 Glad I could add some levity to your day.

#5 – So how did a fabric wallpaper work? I remember seeing that on some DIY shows. I bet fabric gets really heavy after adding starch!

Yes, the fabric did get quite heavy. I was working on a small area first, to make sure I liked it. An area about 5 x 6 feet. And even at that, it was heavy. But just smoothing it out was a bit of a challenge, because it kept stretching in different directions. Then you have to pin the edges to the wall and then cut away the excess when it dries. … but I could see that I was going to need to go around the edges with more starch after the excess was trimmed…. For a small area, this wouldn’t be so bad, but to do large walls, or a whole room, for me it would have to be something I was TOTALLY in love with to go through the process.. and for this room, I just wasn’t.

LOL. Well as someone said, it’s a good thing haircuts only last 3 weeks or so. 🙂 Whenever you feel THAT desperate, let me know!

In a years’ time Riley will look great after each of your clipping sessions. It takes about a year to get the hang of it. Isn’t it good that a bad hair cut only lasts 3 weeks?
Have fun trying interesting clips. A Bichon Frise does not have to have the compulsory rounded clip.

      P.S. I love the look on Riley’s face. He’s not too sure about it . . . .

Thanks for the encouragement, Jo. We usually have Riley and Stella get the Teddy Bear cut. I think it’s so much cuter than the rounded-head look. It sounds like you are a groomer? I love that you encourage me to try “interesting clips.” LOL.. For now, I just want to avoid “clumps.”

Thanks, Lori! My finger is feeling better, so that’s a positive! And Riley is definitely a sweetie, no matter WHAT he looks like! 😉 Thanks!

I learned to make drop templates from your class! Yeah me! I can do them now and not look at the instructions. With my brain, that says a lot! I learned to use my Say The Time Program to remind me to wear my bone stimulator so I don’t forget. I need to wear it every day for 120 days at 2 hrs a day! I forgot Friday. You are too funny with the way you express things. I love your “things you learned this week” list! And RILEY looks GREAT! For the 1st time? I would hate to see what I would do to a dog the 1st time! You will get better and better!

Yes, indeed – Go You!!! I’m glad enjoyed the DIY Droplets Class and are enjoying making the drag and drop templates!!! I haven’t heard of the Say The Time Program. I will look it up. I’m sure I could use that!! Riley doesn’t look too bad – but yeah, he looks better far away than up close! LOL! I do hope I get better! He’s so calm. Stella, on the other hand, would probably be wild. Not sure when I will have the nerve to tackle her!

Thanks for the laugh Karen! 🙂 What did I learn…Well I guess I found out that it takes longer to learn to work with some new software than I expected, although it is tons of fun.

Oh, yes!!! I can definitely relate to that, Maria!!! Keep at it though! In a while, you’ll be whizzing around the program in no time at all!

Your Riley looks just like my Jaxx did. I groomed his sister and him since they were about 12 weeks old. I bought a video on bichon grooming and clipping. I figured if I made a mistake it would grow back. I think you did a great job. I had a grooming table like yours, but always used the kitchen table instead, covered of course. Those tables are good for putting paper cutters on. My doh uses it in the garage for repair work.

Yes, it’s good to know that hair does grow back! And it’s also good to know I am in great company with this “experiment” (for me!). I’ve been watching YouTube videos, but I think I will look for a video, as you mentioned. Thanks!
