Do you keep your promises? Not just to everyone else, but to yourself?
When you have a long list of things to accomplish during the day, are “your” things at the bottom of the list? Are they the ones that will not get done if you run out of time?
I’m not complaining – because I love what I do – but some days I sit at the computer designing or doing other work-related tasks and at the end of the day, I’m too tired or just lack the mental energy to take on any of “my” things.
I haven’t given myself a manicure in weeks. I have several piles of family photos that I need to scan. I have 3 photo albums that I need to complete – actually, make that “start.” And you’ve probably seen the photos of the “trash” I have found at flea markets, just waiting for me to turn into “treasures.” I could go on, really. There’s more.
This week I stumbled across an audiobook by Rachel Hollis: Girl, Wash your Face: Stop Believing the Lies About Who You Are so You Can Become Who You Were Meant to Be. I find it much easier to listen to books like this, rather than to read them myself; so as I started on my 3-hour drive to our son’s house, I started listening. I’m telling you that drive never seemed so fast. When I pulled into their driveway, I wanted to just sit there so I could continue listening.
That chapter totally nailed me. It talks about the promises we make to ourselves… and then break over and over again. She talks about WHY we are able to so easily break those promises and then how to stop doing that. It is a life-changing thought for me.
So today I am making a promise to myself to spend 30 minutes starting one of those photo albums I need to make. That might not seem like a big deal – 30 minutes – but it is if you could see my To-Do List today. And, oh, yeah, we have guests arriving for the weekend in about 6 hours.
The Podcast is only 17 minutes and 48 seconds… but it could easily be the best 17 minutes and 48 seconds of your day – I promise you.
If what Rachel has to share resonates with you, or if you make a promise to yourself you know you will now keep, leave a comment here, or pop over to my Facebook page, where we can more easily interact with each other.
Waiting to become Treasures.
