We moved from Orange County, Southern California, to our home here in Coarsegold, in Northern California, in July 2014. When we were contemplating our move, we knew we would be embracing a very different lifestyle. The atmosphere in Orange County is go-go-go, while Coarsegold offers a slower pace and a friendlier environment.
In Orange County, every store, restaurant, and convenience were within 15 minutes of our home. In Coarsegold, it would be a 20-minute drive to the post-office, a 30-minute drive to the closest movie theater, and a 40-minute drive to “Orange-County-Like” shopping. We were going to have to learn about Propane Heating, “burn days,” and fire abatement regulations. We knew we would have to take an ice chest to the grocery store if we wanted to keep our purchases cold because the store is 30 minutes from our house. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to run to the store quickly if I needed something (think JoAnn’s, Michael’s, Home Depot), and would have to start planning my projects a little better.
We thought we had it all covered.
I shared our moving plans and preparations with you here, on the blog. One of you left a comment for me and said that we would be surprised at the things that would come up, things we hadn’t thought of. I appreciated the input and tried to think of what we could have missed. I really couldn’t think of anything, but knew that when that “something” came up, I would remember that blog comment.
That “something” happened this week.
Our dog Riley went to bed feeling just fine. But when he woke up the next day, and I rubbed his head ‘good-morning,’ he whined in pain. I could barely touch his ear without causing him to yelp, so straight to the veterinarian we went. The doctor couldn’t see anything in his ear, but there was obviously something causing Riley great pain. They had to sedate him to find out what the problem was.
Foxtails. He had 4 foxtails in his ears. So far down into his ears, they couldn’t even be seen with the doctor’s ‘looking-into-the-ear’ instrument.
When we were contemplating our move, this type of problem didn’t even occur to me. So, Blog Commenter, whoever you are, you were right. We hadn’t thought of it all. I wonder if there are any more surprises waiting for us. If you are reading this, and recognize yourself, will you give us some hints?
